My complete thoughts on the new Phineas and Ferb Movie (released 8/28/20) “Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against The Universe” *SPOILER WARNING*
Alright, to start off this thread I would like to say I have always been a very dedicated fan of the Phineas and Ferb franchise. When I was younger I constantly watched and then rewatched episodes of the show. I can very clearly remember the day
“Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across The 2nd Dimension” was released. The story of an alternate universe/reality of all the show’s characters was very interesting to (arguably) people of ALL ages. I don’t want to focus on this for too long, basically I loved that movie.
When going I think Candace Against The Universe, I had mixed feelings. Part of me wanted SO BADLY for this movie to be good, while the other half of me knew it most likely would not live up to expectations. Ok, so for my first point I would like to discuss the pacing.
The first 30 minutes of this movie were painful. I kept waiting and WAITING for what I thought was the “real movie” to start. However, I realized that this WAS the “real movie”. The entire plot of getting taken completely out of random into space by aliens is already bad.
Sure, arguably Phineas and Ferb can be classified as hectic and random, however it is NOT WITHOUT REASON. There are some cases where this is not true, but they are few and far between. The movie feels very scattered and has MANY forgettable scenes.
One of the best songs in the whole film would be Dr Doof’s “Adulting”, and with this I would like to hit my next point. They targeted the WRONG AUDIENCE. Ok, when going into making this movie I belive it was ESSENTIAL for them to target the people who watched them first
and overwhelm them with nostalgia (aka OG Show Intro, More References to old episodes, old jokes, etc.) However, it seemed like they were trying to capture and entirely new audience. In my opinion this movie did not do fan justice, rather it served as a way to attract new fans.
Another point I have is that most of the comedy felt very out of place. I laughed the hardest at things that WEREN’T intended as the “Big Hitter” jokes. Most of these were just filled with dead silence using the old “awkward = funny” Perhaps it’s just me, but most of
the jokes / humor in this movie felt different from the show/movie prior. With repeated gags that get old VERY quickly, the movie becomes difficult to watch near the end. I’ve seen many people complain about certain shots throughout the film but I personally think it was fine.
OVERALL, this movie was not great BUT ALSO not bad. It was somewhere in the middle. I was happy to see some beloved characters return in a modern setting, HOWEVER I believe it was executed very poorly. The pacing, lack of fan-fair, and jokes all felt wrong,
I can compliment them on certain shots of the movie looking nice and that’s about it. At the end of the day, if you absolutely LOVE Phineas and Ferb, this is worth a watch. However, I hope they leave the franchise alone and let it die in peace. This is your movie review lul.
