Don't know what irritates me more: overseas tastemakers/listmakers/gatekeepers who exclude Australian music or barely know it exists, or Australian tastemakers/listmakers/gatekeepers who do exactly the same thing
This tweet inspired by this old but interesting piece on post-punk that seems to have no awareness of the existence of the Birthday Party, Triffids, Go-Betweens, Scientists etc that has informed so much of what's come since https://observer.com/2016/10/post-punk-101-what-is-post-punk/
But the fact is, all those bands and many, many more besides had to move to the UK (usually) to find an audience after being soundly rejected here - and those artists still get only the most glancing, belated, begrudging recognition for their achievements here at home
And guess what? It's still happening. Unless you kiss the right arses, don't cross the wrong people and generally don't make waves, Australian musicians will continue being forced into exile. The main consolation is that they keep making the stuff that endures beyond these shores
I think this song by @jencloher kind of sums it up ... I know @emmaswiftsings will relate
