I used to be a runner. Not like a big runner, but like a few miles every day. But when I got sick I had to stop all that. My body couldn’t handle it (my body couldn’t handle much of anything). So, when I finally got healthy, it was such a joy to get back to running.

It took me a few years to get strong enough to consider getting back to running. But one winter I finally did. It wasn’t easy at first. My body wasn’t used to it. But on one of first runs back, I was struggling to get into a rhythm. Really huffing and puffing...

When I see a big SUV and a guy in a tuxedo up the street. As I run closer to it, the guy in the tuxedo sees me and he lifts his arms and start cheering me on. Shouting “looking good man! Get it!” It was silly but it really gave me a boost...

Then finally when I got to the man, I realized—oh shit, that’s the guy who played Jackie Robinson! (This was I believe feb of 2014 and Boseman wasn’t as well known yet) He continued his cheering, raising his hand for a high-five. We had an epic high-five as I went by...

We both laughed and he did a little boxer move as I kept going. That little lift gave me such a boost it lead to this kind of euphoric run. Sounds dumb, but you have those sometimes.

Later that night at home, I watched Boseman at the Oscars and it finally dawned on me—that’s why he was in that tux. Anyhow, dumb little story. But his passing was kinda triggering. So like—get a colonoscopy my dudes—that shit is brutal.
