Chadwick Boseman was always an important man in Hollywood, but as of lately he’s been important for a very specific reason. He gave little black kids everywhere representation. For the first time in my life as a 25 year old, I saw little black boys and girls in costumes—
at the movie theater in full Black Panther attire. Their parents bought out all the toys and paraphernalia. I didn’t know a single kid that didn’t want to be T’Challa or a member of the Dora Milaje that Halloween. Black people all over the country made that movie one of the—
highest grossing superhero movies of all time, and broke several records in its opening weekend. Chadwick broke barriers for the culture. Black Panther created a cultural shift for our community, and it set a new standard for black representation in superhero film.
He gave the last of what he had and that was his gift to us. The fact that there was even gonna be a Black Panther 2, after being diagnosed with colon cancer 4 years ago, speaks volumes. I hope he’s resting as the King that he is.
