Mounted Military Police, the Baluchi Horsemen of Bihar

Estb - 16 Oct 1919
HQ - Ara, Bihar

A few months ago I was looking up at the ORBAT of Bihar police, while going through the list I stumbled upon a unit called MMP. It intrigued me, I had never heard about this unit before
So here are some interesting details of the unit which I managed to gather from the net & ask someone frm Bihar Police.
MMP was created as an outcome of the Piro riots of 1917 when a need was felt of a mounted police unit.
Thus in 1919, a mounted unit was estb. Since Brits were ruling us at that time, they named the unit as Mounted 'MILITARY POLICE' (usually Auxillary police units back then were called Military police too like Bihar Military Police & UP Military Police which is now known as UP PAC
Earlier there were 7 troops (3 in Ara, 1 each Jamshedpur, Patna, Bhagalpur & Mazaffarpur), now Jamshedpur troops have been brought back to MMP HQ.

In the initial days, it was put under the command of SP Shahbad, but now the unit has its own Commandant

Inspector Uma Singh ↓
S.Q Rizvi IPS on 19 Aug 1947 became the first Indian to take charge of the unit as Commandant, he took the charge from DV Moore IP.

SQ Rizvi was also the first IPS to hold charge as SSP Patna and later retired as IG Bihar Police (in those days there were no DGP posts)
The unit also went to Indo-Nepal border to contain riots bw March & April 1950. MMP was also deployed for PM Security when PM Nehru was touring Jamshedpur bw 25-27 Nov 1950. Apart from these, the unit has seen regular deployments in riot hit areas of Bihar

CURRENT ROLES - maintenance of law & order, riot control, patrolling of riverine

STRENGTH (in 1964)
Risaldar Major - 1
Risaldar - 1
Jamadar (now Naib Risaldar) - 7
Dafadar - 41
Sowars - 172
Horses - 202
Each troop is headed by a Jamadar who has 6 Dafadars and 24 Sowars under him.

⭐ HOLD ON FOR THE MPST INTERESTING PART⭐
Here is the interesting part,

The intial horses & men of MMP were from the 1st (Nizam's Own) Hyderabad Lancers, the same 1st Lancers which was sent to Haifa, Israel in WW1 but never participated in the battle
Also I came to know that the first few batches of MMP Horsemen were Baluchis in ethnicity. This meant that the Hyderbad Lancers has Baluchis Irregulars in their cavalry.

It is interesting to see how Baluchis of 1st Hyderabad Lancers landed up in Ara, Bihar to estb a police unit
Last year CM Nitish Kumar unveiled a statues at MMP Campus marking 100 years of the unit. MMP Campus also houses the the magnificent King George V Church.

That's it for today. Hope you liked it. Thanks 😀
