i understand that it’s unfortunate that they kill off the arthurian characters in toa but i think we have to understand their point of view. like morgana said, it wasn’t their world anymore. and it’s not the same as not belong through time travel, because they just didn’t skip.
they lived through all of that, asleep or not. as much as they could have tried to live forever, i think they knew that something could happen. excalibur being the only sword that could kill morgana, maybe she never thought of it as a possibility until she knew that he was back.
but they woke up to a new world. a world that functioned so well without knowledge of their existence. and all the sudden they wake up and there is trouble. it wasn’t their world to mess up anymore. maybe it was fair game in camelot.
this is why i think they both accepted their fate with such peace. merlin knew that douxie would be there to protect the world after he was gone. i mean that is what he did while merlin was asleep. and morgana was accepting that what she fought for was irrelevant in modern day.
they both understood that no one could bring camelot back. even if there was a way, it wouldn’t be fair to current day people. and this entire idea is why i think hisirdoux was really hit with emotions in the ending scene. because he slowly watched the people from his old life go
away from him. all that was left of camelot was him and archie. he was saying goodbye to his old life, something that time travel gave him back for such a short time.
and arthur was the only one that couldn’t grasp the idea that modern day didn’t need him. that is what caused him to be so messed up in modern day, the idea that this new world didn’t need him like camelot needed him.
