Wow.

@elonmusk + team just showcased the progress of Neuralink, a brain-machine interface.

Closing question: "What is the #1 thing you're hoping the @neuralink1 device will do over time, that you're working toward?"

Their answers:
1/ Sight for the blind:

"Neuralink could provide a visual prosthesis to people with retinal injuries or blindness through eye injuries.

You can plug a camera directly into the visual cortex stimulate 10's of thousands of electrodes to recreate a visual image."
2/ Superhuman vision:

"Over time, you could have ultraviolet or infrared vision; see in radar.

Basically, name your frequency and you could dynamically adjust the sensors and actually have superhuman vision."
3/ Telepathy:

"It's an incredible amount of effort to put your thoughts into words. It comes out completely compressed.

Being able to do that seamlessly without needing to compress it would be great."
(Telepathy cont.) "Words have a very low data rate. We're spending a tremendous amount of mental energy compressing our thoughts into words, and then slowly talking.

With Neuralink we could convey the actual concepts and thoughts, uncompressed, to somebody else." - @elonmusk
4/ Studying neurological diseases

"By virtue of having Neuralink in there, you'll end up learning a ton about how the brain works.

We're augmenting people, but also using that to learn about neurological diseases is really exciting to me."
5/ Creativity

"There's a lot of trapped creativity in your mind.

You can close your eyes and conjure up an incredible Dali-esque scene. But actually showing someone that would take years of honing a craft to be able to paint that…
..Potentially, with enough electrodes in the right places, you could begin to tap into those raw concepts or thought vectors, be able to decode that and show people.

It could be for art, music, even engineering. Imagine a 3-dimensional model.

So mental artistry as a new field."
6/ Technology + biology integration

"I want Neuralink to be less like technology and more like biology.

Seamlessly interfaced with the brain. Stimulation could be precise and multidimensional. Eventually the brain won't know if it's being stimulated from outside or inside."
7/ Relieving anxiety + depression

"Over time, Nerualink can scale to more channels, more brain regions.

I'm really interested in solving things related to anxiety, depression, even removing fear. Imagine rock climbing without fear?"

(Elon: "Maybe you need a little fear.")
8/ Massively reduce human suffering

"We have an incredible opportunity to limit human suffering to a tiny fraction of what it is today.

Pain, the essence of suffering – we might be able to control that finally. So many other diseases and suffering Neuralink could help with."
9/ Coexistence with AI

"Achieving AI symbiosis where you have an AI extension of yourself, like a tertiary layer above the limbic system and cortex.

Having that symbiosis be good such that the future of the world is controlled by the combined will of the people of earth…
...That's the future we want, presumably. The sum of our collective will.

It'll be important from an existential threat standpoint to achieve a good AI symbiosis. That might be the most important thing a device like this achieves." – @elonmusk
10/ The mystery of consciousness

"I'm fascinated by the nature of consciousness.

We're limited by our tools: our ability to interrogate and measure the brain. As these tools improve, it'll move into the realm of physics. It's one of the last big great mysteries in science."
11/ Disease-free future

"Imagine a future where you know what's going to happen to you before it happens.

With these devices we can pick up electric and chemical clues in the brain. We'll be able to prevent diseases ahead of time. I'm looking forward to that future."
12/ Overcome disabilities

"People struggle with challenges through no fault of their own.

Spinal cord injury, brain disease...devastating things that completely change your life. Hopefully we can help them get some function back."
13/ Helping with autism

"I know and love many humans with autism spectrum disorder.

I'm really interested to see how Neuralink might be able to support them if they chose to do that."
14/ Downloading memories

"Everyone loses memories over time. I already can't remember what happened to me when I was younger, and it'll only get worse.

Having a repository of memories you can access whenever you want, I think that would just be such a life-changing experience."
