I tend not to block but rather ignore those ‘I’m being edgy’ or ‘I’m a truth teller’ troll accounts. But every time I speak out that maybe cops should slow down & think first, I have to block blood thirsty non-cops who think being wrong is being tough. It’s not. You’re Exhausting
Your sunglasses and your tattoos don’t make you tough. Tough is putting yourself in the shoes of people so far from lucky we call it criminal. Tough is working cases of serious violent criminals while embracing that 99% of your neighbors aren’t them. Work for them. Always them.
Simon & Garfunkel nailed how I feel with these lines from Kathy’s Song.

‘… And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you’
Here’s that song. It’s simple and gorgeous. Worth a listen this Friday evening. I have to go to work tomorrow for a bit. Will him this as I work felonies.
Many say I don’t know what I’m talking about as a cop and that I should give the benefit of the doubt to cops. We all must get a fair shake but my neighbors get the benefit of the doubt. our constitution and our freedom and our decency demands they do. They’re the job. Not me.
Often someone demands I say what should have been done in cases of obvious cop misjudgment or worse. I don’t. Cuz that’s the point. There’s A WHOLE UNIVERSE OF OPTIONS. Why why why are we a country of children demanding every issue is ‘do it wrong’ or ‘do nothing’. I reject that.
It’s always ‘Either let someone go forever free or shoot them in the back.’ If you know the ID of the suspect and it’s not imminent public danger, then pick your spots. Maybe later. Let timing and circumstance work for you instead of confusing immediate compliance with your job.
Everyone focuses on what the suspect does and that’s important. My entire point is not if a use of force is justifiable. That’s the lowest of bars. It’s if it was INEVITABLE. We must deny our neighbors’ desire for drama whenever possible. It’s not always possible. But try harder.
