Just finished Cowboy Bebop(and my final thoughts on Watanabe).

A thread:

Just...wow

Bebop was an experience. An anime that told a great story with some of the best presentation and music Ive ever seen in any piece of media

Moreover, the ending was just masterclass

Everyone from the main cast of characters had a surprising amount of depth I didnt expect to see, HELL even Ed had an incredible end to her arc

They all start off as 1-note characters with entertaining personalities, but the more you watch, the more layers are peeled off of them

The themes too

There is a very present theme throughout the series, the past and what we make of it.

Someone said this and I loved it. Basically they said that the main cast& #39;s stories are already done by the time you start EP1

Bebop& #39;s entire main plot is the epilogue for the cast& #39;s story, and how they deal with what they& #39;ve made of their lives

By the end of the series, the cast has come to terms with their respective stories, except Spike

The only way Spike could come to terms with his story was by doing what he did at the end of the series and Im baffled that apparently there are people that wish he didnt do it

It was a PERFECT way to end his character arc imo, and I wouldnt have it any other way

Perfect segway into my next topic, Spike and the cast!

I adored Spike as a main character. His personality was entertaining, his design is simple yet so effective and iconic, and the way he later plays on the themes of the show is incredible

He& #39;s def one of my all time fav MCs

Jet definitely has that more hardened style of personality and his story feels like that of classic detective films which is great to see play out

While he is far from being my fav main cast member, I truly loved him in the few final EPs of the series

Ed was.....Ed lol

She was so damn good as the comic relief of the group, and everytime she was on screen I just couldnt help but smile

Her dub VA did an amazing job making her seem like this cute but little crazy hacker, loved her a lot

Also, like I said before, the ending to her arc was just amazing

I love Corgis. They are my fav dog breed definitely, and seeing this cute little bastard on screen was an absolute joy

This is a Watanabe anime OST, SO WE KNOW ITS A FUCKIN 10 ALREADY. My fav song tho?

The way most music in this anime was used was

FUCKIN. SUBLIME.

Episode 5& #39;s use of Rain is legit the best tho, one of my favorite anime moments ever. Watching this on a flatscreen in my family room while pitch dark had my mouth on the goddamn floor all throughout

This anime is 2 decades old, yet its still talked about and has merch being actively produced for even to this day. All of this led me to start this anime as a history lesson of sorts, but I came out of it truly adoring it as its own thing, and not just history

If I had to say my fav Bebop EPs that didnt involve Viscious (cause that would be too easy lol), I would say:

Mushroom Samba
Pierrot le Fou
Ganymede Elegy
Speak like a Child

But yeah, like with every Watanabe anime, this has truly been a special experience, and I can EASILY see Bebop growing on me even more the more time passes

Even the movie which was done 2 years after the OG series, it easily lives up to the Bebop name and was fuckin incredible

A story about people tied up to a past they can& #39;t seem to leave.

The masterful story of the Bebop was one of violence, style, laughter and tears, all accompanied by one of the best endings Ive seen in any anime.

Now to talk about the man himself

Imagine being an anime director and almost single-handedly change the whole industry, while at the same time directing three masterpiece anime IN. A. ROW.

Watanabe is a fuckin god at his craft and everything from his style, to his great way of storytelling is incredible

But my fav part of Watanabe and what makes him a truly unique director is his sublime use of music, no other director comes close

The music during the end credits to his shows tho *chef kiss*

Blue, San Francisco, and Space Fun Club are masterclass songs to end their respective shows with and perfectly represent the type of feeling each viewer is left to feel at the moment they know the journey is over

Moreover, by making each of his shows represent a genre of music

Bebop is Jazz
Champloo is Hip-Hop
Dandy is Disco

It gives each of his shows such a unique sense of identity that very few anime have imo

Not to mention his main casts too

Watanabe& #39;s character writing is amazing, and by having every main character in his shows have the spotlight at least once, it did A LOT to get me to care about them

Cant also forget how each of his shows always finds a way to hit you right in the damn FEELS man....

The lighthearted side of his stories really make the serious and emotional moments hit even harder, and thats my definitely my favorite part of Watanabe& #39;s overall storytelling

Its been a wild ride, and experiencing all the good Watanabe has to offer was nothing short of one of the best media experiences Ive ever had. Bebop, Champloo and Dandy have secured themselves as some of my favorite anime of all time too
