We just wrapped up our first week of hybrid learning.

Our word of the year around here is PRE-FORGIVEN.

Mistakes, blunders, and absurdities will abound. We know this. We’ve given ourselves the grace of forgiving those ahead of time.

Here’s what I’ve learned this week.

1/8
No. 1: Hearts before brains.

The most important routine I’ve built is a brief social-emotional check-in on the in-person days I see my students.

I follow-up immediately on urgent needs and celebrate the successes.

I’ve learned so much about my students in just two days.

No. 2: The points don’t matter.

I planned to grade some learning tasks this week. I realized pretty quickly this was mentally wrecking students. They couldn’t open their minds to learning when all they felt was the stress of a grade.

No points this week, just grace.

3/
No. 3: Scale back the workload without lowering expectations.

I expected too much of students on their first day of virtual, at-home learning. It was overwhelming. I nearly drowned them in the work.

This is not how intellectual confidence develops.

4/
No. 4: Breakdown each day of learning clearly in Google Classroom.

Emojis help. So does organizing topics by week and marking titles with days of the week (not dates).

5/
No. 5: Provide a weekly calendar hyperdoc at the start of each week.

This becomes the hub for it all. I share it with families. It’s especially helpful for my roster of students who are enrolled entirely virtually in the course.

6/
No. 6: Add emojis to emails so students can see when they’ve got a hot one.

https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💻" title="Computer" aria-label="Emoji: Computer">: virtual meeting session link
https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🔥" title="Feuer" aria-label="Emoji: Feuer">: urgent request (do not abuse the flame)

7/
I have a newfound respect for my colleagues and our students. I’m in awe of their resilience and their courage. It’s an honor to be in the boat together, rowing through this ‘rona storm.
