I was gonna avoid negative content on this account because it's a meme account and I've already discussed criticisms of the show with others but rewatching to grab all these screenshots I must say the racist tropes and caricatures are really upsetting
Xavier as the "magical negro" trope, Madame Canardist as the "thieving g****" trope, so many minor villains being people of color contrasted against the almost entirely white Corona civilians and entirely white royal guard.
Some more visuals of the white Corona population, white guards vs brown bad guys, Andrew's crew of bad guys (featuring the only black woman in the show), and Anthony's crew of bad guys
These recurring minor villains who serve the white character Anthony the Weasel are obviously horrible caricatures:
This is more minor, but the way Lance's skin tone in many scenes looks washed-out/ashy/weirdly gray, like the person making coloring decisions didn't have experience with Black skin in varied lighting (last pic is an example where his skin doesn't look washed out, for comparison)
I can't offer meaningful commentary on the treatment/characterizations of characters like Lance, Angry/Kiera, or Adira - that is for Black and Asian fans to speak on - but I do side-eye how two of these characters were thieves and the other is an insufferable asshole
(And of the two thieves, one is almost exclusively comedic relief and the other one bullies her white companion until Rapunzel teaches her not to)
They could've changed supporting characters' backstories and personalities so they weren't so negative. Could have made more Corona citizens and royal guards people of color - and bad guys white - so the difference between good guys and bad guys wasn't racially imbalanced.
(Optimally they would do MORE than that, but I know they were constraining themselves to the characters of the original movie in a lot of places, who were all white)

And, obviously, they should have trashed the racist tropes and caricatures like Jesus Christ what the hell
The show has a lot to it that I like - obviously, I'm spending all this time making memes of it - but it's similar to Buffy the Vampire Slayer (for example) in how it is an extremely white show, in both how most chars are white & depictions of PoC are done offensively poorly
(Obvs there are dozens upon dozens of shows like this, I just use Buffy the Vampire Slayer as an example because 1. many white people consider it ~progressive~ due to having (white) multidimensional/strong/heroic women; 2. BtVS is another extremely flawed show I like)
This thread has been about race thus far, but I will note that villains are given traits of anti-semitic caricatures as well (Anthony the Weasel, that guy who serves lady Cain); and the depiction of the lady-in-waiting Friedborg is horrifically ableist.
(I'm sure a lot of what's in this thread has already been said by people of color but I don't really interact with fandom or look at fan accounts so I've not seen it, I just thought I would talk about it on here as it is something that is both disturbing and glaringly obvious)
I'm going to tack onto this thread: (1/3) I'm of the opinion that all white people are racist on account of how we are raised and socialized in a racist culture, surrounded by racist comments/stereotypes/biases 24/7 and that has an effect on all white people -
(2/3) - whether we’re conscious of it or not. It leaches into our thoughts & behaviors and there is no point where a white person is no longer racist: combating the conditioning caused by constant racist surroundings is a conscious and lifelong commitment (and you will mess up) -
(3/3) - and it is crucial to listen to people of color about racism and learn how to recognize and object to it. (And, obviously, to unlearn your biases.) Again: a lifelong commitment. Please seek people of color who are artists, creators, media critics to follow and listen to.
This is a non-exhaustive list of examples of racism/offensive content in the show, by the way. There's more that people have brought up in replies, or linked me to that I've retweeted, or I remembered after making this thread I posted about separately- and no doubt there is more.
Gonna make this longer again by linking to a related thread I wrote this morning https://twitter.com/tangledtxtposts/status/1300141951816138753
