I know many of you haven’t started the school year yet or maybe are online right now but I just finished week 1 of in person teaching and have a few take aways if anyone needs them. Here we go...
1. Stop stressing and planning about the school year now! If you are still on summer break, drop everything you are doing and take a nap, read a book, or lose yourself in nature. You need energy and focus. I know I didn’t do enough to take a break and it’s been tough.
2. The kids will wear masks. Adults in my town don’t but the kids will, even the kids that I always fight about every rule. I don’t know why, maybe they are just so glad to be back but they listen. They don’t always wear it right but correct when you kindly ask. Thank you!!!!
3.Your coworkers are awesome. You will find support in people that you never even had time to talk to before. Lean on them, steal their amazing ideas, let them cry on your shoulder, laugh with them. You are going through this together and they are the only ones that really get it
4. The kids don’t care about how fancy your Canvas page is or if you even know what a Bitmoji is. They miss you. Your sense of humor, compassion, the passion you have for your subject. I know we always miss kids and teach because we love them but this year Ss feel this too.
5. Disposable masks > cloth. I know I’ll get lots of Twitter hate for this statement, it’s SO wasteful. But the humidity here has been unbearable & the disposable ones are less hot & absorb sweat more. And they are so gross I can just toss it. I will switch back w cooler temps
6. I’ve stayed home since March 13 and it’s been a challenge adjusting to seeing so many people a day. Build time into your schedule for some quiet. I’m not an overly social person by nature so I think it’s hit me harder than others. Outside of work, find moments of quiet.
I may add more later but my brain is foggy and I need to connect with my own family right now, it’s been hard to go from seeing them 24 hours a day to only a few.
