Been noodling on this app for a long time. it tries to answer some questions, but rn it's mainly asking a lot of them.

a thread of cursory thoughts on the music discovery app i'm building, called These Chains:
how can i discover music when the algo keep pushing the same music | the wrong vibe | isnt pushing my taste

what does it mean to create and publish music? what supports a sound: bandmates? labels? etc
^that said, working on the assumption that sounds arent created alone, but through other ppl (past, present, future), how do listeners get to understand that process?

and is that process important in discovering music? (i think so!)

how much of music is about trust?
trust not only in making music, but publishing&listening

when I go to a show, listen to music, there's a sense of trust between the artist and listener. not sure how to fully expand this thought rn, but i guess, i trust you put on a banger, and ill be open minded
(not specifically a 'banger', but i hope you understand what i mean)
what are the higher forces that bring the humans to make music together? why make music? with someone else? why manage that music? why study it?
There are some bands that I SWEAR after seeing them live something (god?) out there crossed the paths of the band member (if you know me, I'm talking about @lcdsoundsystem and @Hot_Chip )

if there's a higher force to put bands together there must be one for like-minded ppl too
in my exp, i have not resonated with a live artist i never heard before more than when i saw @holyfuck open for hot chip. they fucking rock (with smpte!)

There's more trust here: trust to play a show together, i trust hot chip to introduce me to new artist via openers, etc etc.
it's probably obvious and trite to say but there's so many beautiful connections in making music. I only really got to experience that privilege a few times when I was making and publishing music as a teenager.
But playing with a bass guitarist for the first as a drummer is an ecstasy that i dont think ill ever have again.

i met that bassist through a friend and he joined our hs metal band (...more trust)
so where am i going with this rambling? i forget lol.

here's a line from LCD's "tonite"

Oh sure it's ruling the airwaves
What remains of the airwaves
And we're frankly thankful for the market psychology you're hipping us to
(in my interpretation of this verse) this is, i think, the core problem im trying to solve. what does mean to discover music in a time where Sp*tify et al have a concerning amount of control of how we consume art.

i think the answer is trust-- in the artist and their network
boiling this down to something a lot less metaphysical:

if i like a band, (or trust a band)

and the bandmates have other projects and bands

i would definitely like to take a listen to those other projects
that's what I'd like to build. eventually i'd like to ask more questions, answer some of them, maybe throw them together in a 'manifesto'

anyway here's a preview of the app.

It's called These Chains (named after one of my top 3 hot chip songs)
I asked the app for the relationship of people around the band @lcdsoundsystem

rn it's just bandmates, but down the line I'd like to include everything from label-mates to writing credits
it's fairly barebones, the meat of the app is @d3js_org pulling from the painfully slow @discogs api (no shade!), and served on @glitch

it needs like a real design validation process, like do ppl want this. but in my heart, i believe this to be a need ppl want.
and i think there's a hole it fits too! i've seen so many app that are rubbing shoulder with this idea, but are not this idea. at least so far.
a part of me has been scared to share these thoughts, bc i think it's something that could be used to exploit. as much as it is a response to the algorythmically served music, it also dovetails perfectly with it.

im also scared ppl will steal my idea, and butcher it lol.
covid has been hard, i miss seeing live shows, i miss seeing these connections play out live (one of my fave live moments is just seeing al doyle and nancy whang just str8 vibe)
and being a fresh grad means working on the thing i think matter and could be a current against what is ultimately an oppressive corporate force is second to paying rent.
this idea has been in my head for a few years now, and the mental energy i commit to it ebbs and flows. its been increased in the past 2 weeks, so i just wanted to get these thoughts down.
and also this idea comes from a fanboy who can code, and part of this process is publishing my thoughts bc i know the're ppl on my TL who might have some helpful thoughts (but this is not an expectation)
the backend needs to be totally rewritten, and i would like to share a shitty but workable prototype. i hope to share that with yall soon.

my brain is tired, im a shit writer and this is the most ive written in a long time, so tentative end of thread :)
