What Stockholm syndrome is really about and how it could be connected to Night Changes...a thread

So we know that H had some say in the band going on hiatus and his reasoning was that he didn’t want us to get burnt out because he saw how much of ourselves we put into the fandom and promoting them for years on end.

I think that H also wanted out personally and while I’m not sure of the reasoning it can be seen that he wanted out in some of the songs he wrote including Stockholm syndrome.

The song starts with “who’s that shadow holding me hostage? I’ve been here for days” acknowledging how overworked and trapped the boys started feeling at the end. This can be seen in lyrics from DFWYB (Ni wrote on) and strong (Lou wrote on) back on the midnight memories album.

This means that the boys while they were having fun also wanted to make sure that we were happy. Back to Stockholm syndrome, the lyric “who’s this whisper telling me that I’m never gonna get away” shows that the boys knew they were trapped and didn’t know how to get out.

“Baby look what you’ve done to me, baby you’ve got me tied down” would also support how they felt S*co was weighing them down with their heavy schedules and wasn’t giving them enough freedom to live.

Because of when they were formed, they missed out on the last half of their teen years and their early twenties, which is time they’ll never get back. H and the other boys knew that this could be a possibility but they never imagined it would get this bad in the end especially +

with Z leaving for personal reasons shortly after this was written. S*co got to the point where they were controlling way too many aspects of their lives and they recognized it. In Night Changes, all the boys are acknowledging that they’re losing control of their freedom +

and voice in the band. They’re realizing that specifically in the chorus. They hint at a possible hiatus with the line “disappearing when you wake up but there’s nothing to be afraid of”. This was meant to warn fans that they could possibly go on hiatus or breakup but they +

didn’t want us to worry. They also wanted to make sure that fans knew that whatever happened with the band they’ll still be here for us with the line “it will never change me and you”.
