Normal people actually existed in Ye Olden Days Britain, and a lot of the moral problems we see in historical romance (especially those involving POC) would be gone if their stories were considered more marketable. [This is not a subtweet this is “TL commentary making me think.”]
Historical romance is either on the realistic side or the romantic fantasy side. If you dip your toe TOO far into the realistic side, suddenly you have to grapple with the fact that 1800s aristocrats were quite evil. I’m just saying!
If you like seeing ordinary POC in historical romance you should read Beverly Jenkins. If you want UK histrom real bad you should read Vanessa Riley, especially A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby, which has a cinnamon roll amputee Duke who loves boobs (consensually)
This thread is also why I have basically stopped reading most histroms. I’m just finding it harder and harder to pretend dukes are nice lmao
