This past week, I have closely followed the events in Kenosha, WI, especially the events involving Kyle Rittenhouse (1/_)
I have followed events in near real time through both Twitter as well as mainstream media outlets, and have seen some surprising results relative to my expectations (2/)
Initially on the night of/morning after, coverage seemed confused as expected. I believe videos from the night were beginning to surface. Verbs used were “fired into” protestors, which in hindsight is correct, although this would not be the case later on (3/)
One notable example was Rep. Omar saying that a “domestic terrorist executed two people”. While the video evidence for the first death is inconclusive to me, I believe the second and especially third shootings are moreso up for debate, and the wording (4/)
Of Rep. Omar’s tweet may have incited a stronger backlash from those arguing that the acts were in self defense. (5/)
Perhaps this is the intent, and the deeper I delve into this platform (typically through a personal account) seems to show that the purpose of much of the content here is to divide and incite, which is a dangerous rabbit hole to explore (6/)
Also surprising is how while the right gets the most attention for spreading “fake news”, the takes I read on the right were often factually correct although morally ambiguous. Many had taken the time (or taken from other that had taken the time) (7/)
To provide video evidence. Meanwhile, I saw left-leaning accounts often sharing Rittenhouse’s purported criminal record, which seems to have been misattributed and belongs to another individual with a similar/same name. Same story with Rittenhouse’s mom (8/)
To clarify, a photo was being shared of a woman that was supposedly taken of his mother the same night that he shot people on, which some are saying was taken in a different city, and obstensibly on a different day (9/)
However, I am personally disgusted by using the purported criminal records of the victims from that night. The crimes listed are not capital crimes, and justifying the deaths of these individuals because of their criminal records leads down (10/)
A dangerous path paved by the likes of Nazi Germany and other authoritarian regimes that history does not smile down upon. (11/)
