/ I'm going to be analyzing York 9 FC's 3-2 win over Forge FC in the 905 Derby on August 26th. All of York's goals came from set pieces, so their attacking play won't be focused on much here. I'm mostly interested in how they defended and where they could have done better.
/ In defense, York 9 played as a 442. Usually solid, however, they had trouble playing against Forge's press when in possession, and overloads when out of possession. I'll be talking about the press first.
/ Here, Forge press the man in possession while 1) marking passing options 2) pressing the others. This forces York to pass the ball long as a backwards pass is too risky. When you force the ball long, you have a higher chance of turning the ball over and winning possession.
/ York didn't concede many chances from overloads, but Forge failed to make the most of them. The player on the ball is aiming a cross to the far post, where Forge have 3 runners & York have 2 defenders attentive. The Y9 LB & LM are tracking their runners, but the CB isn't.
/ Here, we have the Y9 RB out of position, forcing his RM to cover for him, leaving space for Forge to run into at the top of the box. No goal came from this move, however, Y9 definitely showed how they would give up their 2-0 lead.
/ Here, Forge players marked 2, 3 and 6 all have space to run into, either 1v1 or no Y9 player covering. Players marked 5 and 4 are are drawing markers out of position and creating more space to run into. Player 1 should get the ball back bc he has options to pass to.
/ Here, players marked 1 and 2 are pulling the markers out of position and creating space to run into. Player 1 eventually loses his marker and runs into space. Player 3 stays wide as a crossing option + forcing the Y9 RM to track back.
/ It's not all doom and gloom, Y9 are more than capable of attacking. This attacking move was finished by the player on the ball taking a shot. I'd argue that players marked 1 & 2 are better passing options. Player 1 can lay it off to player 2, or cross into player 3.
/ It was rare to see Forge leave so many holes in their defense, so, I think Y9 should have taken advantage of that better.
/ Here, pictured, is Y9 beating Forge's press which is their best asset. They really make players uncomfortable on the ball. The starred player drew 4 Forge players in before passing to player 1, who has attacking options in players 2 and 3.
/ Another time Y9 managed to beat the press. The starred player is about to get the ball, and immediately has passing options from the space left behind by the pressing Forge players. Player 1 being the best option, 2 and 3 being good enough.
/ York 9 have a lot to work on, however, they did beat the league champions so credit where credit is due. Losing a 2-0 lead is a huge mental blow, but finishing 3-2 shows strength imo.
