/ In the past such low income voters might have sought the tribal protection of a working class community and the Labour movement, but deindustrialisation has shattered such communities and hugely weakened working class organisations.
/ Tribalism is absolutely fundamental to understanding this phenomenon. It is a natural human disposition to seek safety in a tribe. The political right understand this very well and are cynically exploiting even while not caring in the least for low income people.
/ The new kleptofascist elite have a huge advantage in that caring only for themselves and the support of their super-rich paymasters, they are willing to tell any lie, no matter how cynical in order to win tribal support. They couldn't care less about the damage they inflict.
/ Like all fundamental human relationships tribal identification is emotional. A tribal mentality values loyalty and self-sacrifice. And this makes tribal mentality very resilient to hardship, something very useful for a negligent and corrupt regime.
/ These tribal Tory supporters may become angered by government failure, but they will remain loyal to the Tories so long as they continue to pose as the party of the white native tribe.
/ One reason I keep on banging on about tribalism, is because for many insecure people the link between economic reality and voting is not via a direct rational response to the economic situation but via tribal affiliation.
/ The more chaotic and dysfunctional our society becomes, the more people will flee into mutually antagonistic tribal groups fighting among each other for status and supremacy. This video by Prof Timothy Snyder on Sadopopulism explains this very well
/ Look at Trump and Cummings' political strategies. They're aimed at creating chaos, insecurity and division. They destroy hope that the whole population can benefit from rational and enlightened policies. They create islands of cynicism, confusion, fear, anger and hate.
/ This can all take place because deindustrialisation and other social changes have shattered the working and middle classes as coherent political forces. Class politics is dead. We now have a ruthless kleptofascist elite manipulating a confused, disorganised and atomised mass.
/ I've written about the crumbling of the working class as a political force, but what of the middle class? The Tories no longer represent them, "Fuck business" said it all. The Remain movement was predominantly middle class but after 4 years remains politically disorganised.
