I want more children to be able to walk and cycle safely to school, and it should be the easiest and least risky option. However, I know there are too many scary main roads, and speeding vehicles to make that the obvious choice.
In London people will find bits of their journey are safer but we can do much more. The Mayor had ÂŁ100m of bids for Streetspace money, and was only able to award ÂŁ30m. Now, weeks later just ÂŁ6.8m has been invested. We need more money and we need more action to make streets safer.
Cutting our default urban speed limit to 20mph is a simple helpful change that @grantshapps could make, it wouldn’t need a lot of new signage either. Fast traffic makes crossing main roads harder, and can mean even roads with little traffic are unpleasant to cross or to cycle on.
