1. The topic in question is “Al-Walaa” which could mean enslavement, servitude, loyalty, allegiance etc is a subtopic of “Al-Jarh wa At-Ta’deel” meaning discrediting and accrediting or criticism and praise or disapprobation and approbation.
2. There are 3 types of Al-Walaa. The first being “Al-Walaa Al-Itaaqah”. This is the most common amongst Arabs and in the field of Hadith. The narrators in this category derived their gentilics or demonyms from the tribes of their masters.
3.For example, Layth Bn Sa’ad Al-Misri Al-Fahmi. The slave of FAHM. The emphasis on AL-FAHMI. That’s why and where he got Al-FAHMY in his name. He is not AL-FAHMY by tribe but the tribe of his master.
4. The second is “Al-Walaa Bil Islam”. This is when someone reverts to Islam in the hands of a Man who is already a Muslim, the revert is then attributed to the family of the man. For example, the great Imam Bukhari. His name is Muhammad Bn Ismail Al-Bukhari Al-Ju’fi.
5. He got the AL-JU’FI because his grandfather Al-Mughira became a Muslim through Yaman Bn Akhnas AL-JU’FI.
6. The third is “Al-Walaa Bil Hilf”. Simply put, this is through oath of allegiance or alliance. For example, our very own Imam Malik Bn Anas Al-Asbahy Al-Taimi. (With love and smile on my face

).

7. The AL-TAIMI came about after his tribe Al-Asbahy approached the Quraish tribe of AL-TAIMI for alliance. This is mostly a smaller tribe (Al-Asbahi) approaching a bigger tribe (Al-Taimi) for alliance to support and protect them in case of war or other vicissitudes of life.
8. As such, the smaller tribe are referred to the Mawlaa of the bigger tribe. In another report, it’s said the “AL-TAIMI” came about because Imam Malik’s grandfather, Malik Bn Abi-Amir was an employee of Talha Bn Abdullah Al-Taimi.
9.However, it is a weak narration.
In total unrelated info, Imam Malik’s grandfather was a student of the Umar Bn Khattab.

10. And was one of those involved in the collection of the parchments upon which Quranic texts were originally written when those were collected during the time Uthman Bn Affan.
11. Against this backdrop, the word “Al-Mawla” is a shared word between Al-Mawla Al’alaa or Al-Muhaalaf (Derived from the second type of Al-Walaa. See tweet 6) and Al-Mawlaa Al-Asfal or Al-Muhalif (Ditto).
12. The master of a slave is Mawlaa A’laa and his subject or slave is Al-Mawlaa Al-Asfal. The one through which someone reverted is also Mawlaa A’laa and the revert is Al-Mawlaa Al-Asfal. These types of words are called “Al-Ad’daad” in Arabic Literature.
13. They are known as Contranyms or autoantonym. They are words with two meanings that happen to be the opposite of each other.
14. The benefits and importance of these in Hadith and in history, is to enable the separation of chaff from wheat. One would be able to discern who is who and not confuse narrators. Biographical evaluation is key!
15. In conclusion, the “Mawlaa” engraved on those rocks or in other places could mean the opposite of what we thought he was referring to even though the word is mostly used for a slave.
