I feel bad for city centre businesses, I do, but this whole government push to return to the office is really pissing me off today. One: house prices are so high, especially in London, that we’re forced to live further and further from our workplaces (more)
Which means that we have to commute using overcrowded and expensive public transport, spending less time with our families, having less leisure time and, consequently, a poorer quality of life (more)
And suddenly along comes this horrible situation, but a brilliant opportunity for us to really consider our working patterns and practices, address the persistent issue of work/life balance and set up efficient and productive home working (more)
And now suddenly the government have taken it upon themselves to encourage us back to the office like we’ve all been on some extended holiday? Presumably because they have people bending their ears off about losing money (more)
Some of us have been working this whole time. Successfully. And surely it’s up to the individual businesses to work out what is best for them and their workforce? Some may need everybody back, some may not, but why is the government stepping in here? (more)
And, two: I’m still buying lunch and coffee, and going for an after-work drink, just locally. What about local businesses that are benefitting from people working from home? Especially in areas with few job opportunities (more)
Most people I speak to are planning to go back at some point, but also don’t want to give up completely what working from home has given them, more time and balance, just to keep a Pret open.
