Getting educated about the job happens whether you're a full time employee or an intern, so why would an intern be paid less?

It's also devaluing yourself if your opening offer is "I'll do it for free."

How do you think the company will negotiate down from that? What's their counter offer? "Free? No, YOU have to pay US for the honor of working for us!"

It also devalues the work of others. This is one of the reasons you see all these horror stories of companies taking advantage of artists and not paying them properly, because there's always someone out there who says things like "I'll do it for free!"

Never offer your services for free.

Never work without a contract.

Never work for someone who treats other people poorly, even if they treat you nicely.

Art is labor. Labor is not free. Don't let people take advantage of you or others.
