Yesterday I got a haircut and the white hairdresser thinned out my thick beautiful indian hair because she thought it was hard to manage. I didn't ask her to thin it, I never mentioned that it was hard for me to manage, because it isn't. Reads a lot like a microaggression to me.
I haven't paid for a haircut since 2014, before that since 2009. I've been doing it myself this entire time. I was really excited to try letting someone else do it again and this was a huge letdown. Going forward I'm looking for a curly haired POC barber.
I'm honestly stunned at how inept she was at handling my nonwhite curly hair. I don't know what the curriculum is in cosmetology school, but it seems pretty evident to me that learning how to handle different hair types should be part of the education.
This is how busted it looked when I got out of the chair versus when I got home, showered and took care of it properly. I had a panic attack after taking the first picture.
I should have gotten out of the chair the second she pulled out a hairbrush to 'tame it' before she cut it, I definitely should have gotten up after the repeated comments about wrangling it into straight hair. It was a really upsetting experience and I won't be repeating it.
Anyway, if anyone has experience with DevaCuts, please share with me. I'm thinking that might be the way to go from here on out, since DevaCuts are done when the hair is dry and curly so the end result much more strongly resembles a normal hair day. End of thread.
