Great sentiment yesterday @doniveson, but truth be told, we’ve been trying to work with the @CityofEdmonton to build affordable housing for over a year.... (1) #yeg #yegcc
We actually have the provinal funding from @YourAlberta you’re asking for.... @doniveson @CityofEdmonton #yeg #yegcc (2)
We also have the land.... (3) @doniveson @CityofEdmonton #yeg #yegcc
And we have the resources to build fast... @doniveson @CityofEdmonton #yeg #yegcc (4)
BUT we DO NOT have a WILLING PARTNER in the @CityofEdmonton... @doniveson #yeg #yegcc (5)
Is more money needed from @YourAlberta to #endhomeless? Yes of course @doniveson @CityofEdmonton (6) #yeg #yegcc #AbLeg #abpoli
But the money becomes useless if OUR OWN CITY stands in the way of building @doniveson @CityofEdmonton #yeg #yegcc #AbLeg #abpoli (7)
Since it’s taking so long to obtain a development permit from @CityofEdmonton even our @CMHC_ca funding is at risk! #yegcc #yeg #abpoli #canpoli (8)
and lets be clear, when we first applied for a development permit in April 2019 (after we successfully completed 3 months of community consultation) we discovered some pretty discriminatory @CityofEdmonton zoning bylaws... @doniveson (9)
We have the land and the ability to build 120 units of PERMANENT affordable housing units this fall but we can’t get a single development permit from @CityofEdmonton. @doniveson @Ward4Aaron @AndrewKnack #yeg #yegcc
Lets continue this thread with some facts.

What is affordable housing?

In Canada affordable housing is housing that costs less than 30% of a households income. (12) #yeg #yegcc #edmonton
Is affordable housing just for individuals who have experienced homelessness?

NO! All Edmontonians, regardless of background, need housing that fits their needs and budget. But we want to point out, the number of people unsheltered in our community is rising. (13) #yeg #yegcc
On top of numbers of unsheltered community members rising, more than 20,000 households in #yeg spend MORE than 50% of their income on rent alone. (14)
When Edmontonians are cornered into paying 50% of their income to rent they are forced to decide what necessities to cut out. Is it prescriptions? Food? Utilities? Transportation? (15) #yeg
