Thread worth reading. We are broken but how we heal has to have justice as bare minimum. Part of where I struggle is the deepest fault line isnt bc of Trump, we’ve always been broken (& thats part of why racism/slavery often couched in language of original sin)./1 https://twitter.com/stevenpmillies/status/1299333536919556096">https://twitter.com/stevenpmi...
I need to find a way to accept that couple as part of our community, yes. And I will admit that is a responsibility and challenge I dont want...But we all need to face fact that we are a racist country. And racial justice has to become a basic prerequisite for who we are/2
As @stevenpmillies notes, Trump is symptom/evidence not cause of our brokeness. When people note nativism & suspicion of gov has always been part of US politics...need to have hard talk abt how that was often tied to racism & xenophobia./3
Social sin & structural violence are the only way we can navigate past the destructive focus on individual acts. In class we talk abt the “distress of the privileged” & how to put that into perspective while prioritizing justice for the excluded & oppressed. We are all broken /4
We are all broken by white supremacy. We are all trapped by the narrative of American exceptionalism that makes our dignity & community contingent on viewing others as lesser. What we do globally, we do locally. /5
Over the last 4 days, I constantly saw America’s greatness championed as in opposition to the rest of the world. Domination (cultural or militaristic) cannot lead to being a good citizen within the global or local community. It makes it impossible to show what really is good /6
2B honest dont know how 2 accept couple w guns as part of community as long as they are there with those guns. As long as its ok for a 17 yr old to walk around openly with a rifle to shoot protestors (and just walk away) while my students & friends are afraid of being shot /7
I am terrified of what a Trump reelection means for all of our brothers & sisters whose very lives are threatened by emboldened nativism, racism, & patriarchy. WE are broken & to quote Tutu - there is no future wo forgiveness. /8
Step 1 is ALWAYS truth telling. We are a racist country & until we can say that, realize that is true alongside all the beauty & ideals present in America, we will remain broken. /end
