Activist movements raise the salience of particular issues thereby generating the attention and energy required to address them -- but the means adopted to do so can often derange the judgment required to understand and thus to solve the underlying problem
It may be a facet of human nature that we need people to make urgent, plangent emotionally compelling appeals to passion and fear in order to move us to care and to act.
But it is a fact of reality that problems can only be solved by skeptical, dispassionate, objective, fact-based appraisal unconstrained by taboo or groupthink.
Ideally there would be a division of labor between those who make the activist appeals and those who design and implement the solutions.

But we now have whole fields of study under the thumb of those who have drank their own kool-aid
