It's Friday (finally) and before I crawl into my PJs for the weekend, I thought I would do a little thread about some of the lovely books for children and YA we have published in 2020 at @speakingtiger14 . For this week, day, year sure needs some cheer. So here goes.
The year began with two of our favourite authors. Bulbul Sharma's beautifully illustrated book 'Birds In My Garden and Beyond'. Not just birds, it has Bulbul's trademark gentle humour. And a fat cat. https://www.speakingtigerbooks.com/shop/childrens/birds-in-my-garden-and-beyond/
The other one was by the fabuper Shabnam Minwalla and book 3 in her Nimmi series, 'Nimmi's Bizuper Birthday'. It is easily the funniest and cutest middle grade book of the year. Also catch the other two Nimmi books. https://www.speakingtigerbooks.com/shop/childrens/nimmis-bizuper-birthday/
I love putting together anthologies, and this one was hugely fun to research. And it includes a translation of eternal fav Goopy Gyne. 'The Magic Shop: Classic Stories of Magicians, Wizards and Spellmakers'. https://www.speakingtigerbooks.com/shop/childrens/the-magic-shop-classic-stories-of-magicians-wizards-and-spellmakers/
In our Teenage Diary series, for a completely different take on Razia Sultan (she writes poetry, battles period pains while being wise and strong) read 'The Teenage Diary of Razia Sultan'. It is a book for every teen and pre-teen girl. https://www.speakingtigerbooks.com/shop/childrens/the-teenage-diary-of-razia-sultan/
Warrior queens means Rani Laxmibai. The story of a teenage Manikarnika, as she becomes the ruler of distant Jhansi, and finds her voice and strength as a woman, is touching and inspiring. 'The Teenage Diary of Rani Laxmibai' https://www.speakingtigerbooks.com/shop/childrens/the-teenage-diary-of-rani-laxmibai/
We've been fortunate to publish a few works of the artist Mehlli Gobhai. 'The Tree Book' is so beautiful you just want to hug it...or the nearest tree. We were happily surprised by how much everyone loved this book. https://www.speakingtigerbooks.com/shop/non-fiction/the-tree-book/
Before the pandemic struck, the incomparable @arunava had given me his translation of Sukumar Ray's Hojoborolo. We published it as 'Habber-Jabber-Law'. It is so funny, so intelligent, and so satirical that it is a classic translation of a classic. https://www.speakingtigerbooks.com/shop/childrens/habber-jabber-law-a-nonsense-adventure/
The voices of children come to the forefront. In 'A Bend In Time' 12 children came together to write their thoughts about the pandemic . If one thing makes you smile about this pandemic it will be this. And don't miss @bijal_v amazing introduction https://www.speakingtigerbooks.com/shop/childrens/a-bend-in-time-writings-by-children-on-the-covid-19-pandemic/
