In her first press conference as FinMin, @cafreeland made it clear her goals were:
- Green recovery
- Inclusive recovery
- Job creation and economic growth.

Figuring out what's at the centre of this Venn diagram is occupying a lot of my thoughts lately. (Thread)
If you look at the previous 4 recessions, going back to the 70s, they were remarkably consistent:
- Two hardest hit sectors were construction and manufacturing
- 80% of all net job loss, in each recession, was experienced by men

They were shockingly identical.
Now we've got a situation (depending on the metric) where 50-60% of the net job loss was experienced by women. May get even worse if we have another round of school and daycare closures.

Job loss skews more female, younger and urban than past recessions.
What makes an inclusive green recovery so difficult is, as Hossein's research shows, green jobs skew very male (and as research out of Brookings in US shows, skew white).
Not surprisingly, I still believe an inclusive green recovery is the right goal.

But let's not kid ourselves - this is going to take some really creative policy thinking.
Speaking of which: if you're one of those creative policy thinkers that can help solve this problem, my team at SPI is hiring! We need you. The country needs you. Apply today! https://institute.smartprosperity.ca/SPI-ResearchAssociate
