J.W. Fowler's 'stages of faith' (<- Kohlberg's stages of moral development).
Many anti-religion people seem trapped at stages 1 or 2
-> their unbelief is as underdeveloped as the infantile beliefs they're rejecting
Many institution-fixated 'believers' seem trapped at stage 3.
From what I've seen/heard of some 'rad trad' outlets, there's a very strong whiff of stage 3 thinking (similar to Kohlberg's 'rules, law, order' moral reasoning).
The challenge, always, must be to facilitate more developed forms of religious faith & moral reasoning.
While each development stage is typical of a point in the life cycle, many adults remain stuck, e.g. in an adolescent mindset.
-> identification with a church/religion similar to membership of a teen peer group/gang (huge importance ascribed to emblems, group-lingo, attire ...).
