East Syriac scribe ʿAṭaya b. Faraj (ca. 1520-1596) was one of the most prolific and illustrious Syriac scribes. Born in Alqosh, ʿAṭaya spent his life in Gazarta (Cizre). #Syriac #manuscripts #syriacmanuscripts
It was proposed that ʿAṭaya designed a particular type of the Gospel lectionary that included a set of three miniatures (Entry into Jerusalem, the Doubting of Thomas and St. George) and decoration.
This type of lectionary was reproduced during centuries within both the Church of the East and Chaldean Church. Each element of ʿAṭaya's manuscripts is perfect, including the binding.
The most exquisite of ʿAṭaya's lectionaries was produced for the East Syriac church in Jerusalem.
This manuscript is simply unparalleled.
