Bit of a thread coming up. Predictable though I am, how could I be in Fulham and NOT take photos of Mary Macarthur House, Field Rd, opened by the Mayor in 1939, on the site of slum clearance? @MunicipalDreams @lccmunicipal @ToursHistoric @TUC_Library @CHistorians @HistoryWM
Pretty certain that Mary Macarthur would have approved of these 40 2,3 & 5 roomed flats built on 718 acres with laid out gardens with space for children to play. Pram sheds & drying room with warm air supplied to cubicles. Kitchen with tiled dado, ventilated larder
with slate slab shelf, a flap table, draining board, clothes airer & serving hatch. Coal fire to heat oven & provide constant hot water to sink, copper, bath & basin. Each balcony with gate for privacy
The Mayor of Fulham, himself a builder, said it used to be said that those who worked in the building trade used to build mansions & walk out of them & build workhouses & walk into them. Now they built houses and lived in them
In her life time (1880-1921), Mary Macarthur visited a great many women living & working in cramped and unhealthy houses. The choice of her name for these new dwellings was spot on.
