Someone ( @LandsharkRides asked me about the symbolism of the story of Little Red Riding Hood. I& #39;ll summarise what I told him here.
The fairy tale is almost always an exoteric description of an initiatic journey, and it is no different now.
Red riding hood is here the initiate, indicated by the redness of the hood.
The sickly grandmother is like the fisher king, the God wounded (made impotent) by the Fall.
The fact the both characters are portrayed as female may indicate that the story describes a female initiation.
The forest red riding hood enters is like a hell, her entry into it is the initiatic & #39;descent into hell& #39;.
The big bad wolf is obviously the devil.
The grandmother is then the philosophers stone, which is enveloped by the wolf, i.e. covered by the devil.
now the initiate did not stay on the straight path, as her mother had told her,
but rather got lost picking flowers, as the wolf had persuaded her to,
so she did not recognise immediately the wolf upon seeing the grandmother.
The attributes of the pretend grandma are these:
the deep voice could refer to the "Word"
the big eyes the the "All-Seeing" (Eye)
the big hands to the "Omnipotence& #39;
Lastly the big mouth, which, as opposed to the voice/word, does not represent the going out of the centre,
but rather the going in, which is shown by the being eaten of little red riding hood.
In some versions the story ends here.
There are also version where the girl escapes.
One with a string or thread, representing the "thread of life", binding her to the wolf,
which she cuts off or places on a substitute.
Another where she needs to take a shit, indicating that she was not yet pure enough.
One where she eats the flesh of her grandmother left by the wolf, seems to symbolise & #39;u become what u eat& #39;.
The one with the tarp over the river is the "crossing the Waters" or the "walking on water",
which the devil/wolf isnt able to do so he drowns in it.
In some versions the wolf is cut open to rescue red riding hood and the grandmother,
this is then the death of the & #39;mother of all things& #39;, where the initiate is & #39;reborn& #39; beyond nature.
the wolf is then filled with stones, representing the & #39;earthseeking& #39; power, and drowns in a well, i.e the waters again. That is a short overview and hint at the real meaning.
