It's late and I can't sleep and I want to speak up about something I've noticed since I've joined Twitter. 🧵
When I first joined, I honestly didn't expect the amount of followers I've reached in such a short amount of time. I am so thankful to have the opportunity to share my experiences with other like-minded individuals.
Overall the tech community is GREAT, but there seem to be a lot of posts focused on "how to boost engagement" that are rather egotistical.
Engagement is great! But it is a 2 way street. Too many times I see an influencer post a question with hundreds of likes and comments, yet they don't comment back or even like the comments.
Or an influencer will comment on a who-to-follow post that everyone tagged is amazing, but they aren't following all those people themselves. It's rather hypocritcal and seems to be a way to drive up more likes for that person's ego.
As a collective dev community, we should all be doing our best to engage with each other for learning and networking experiences, and not just for popularity. (Most of us aren't in high school anymore!)
It can be easy to get caught up in striving for popularity instead of building relationships with other REAL people who share similar goals.
I think all of us want to gain a following, and there's nothing wrong with that. But we should be actively engaging with everyone while building that following, and focus on building a following that has actual meaning instead of trying to pad numbers to boost our egos.
/end rant, sorry if I upset you
