Since I'm in humanely bored, here's a thread on how to survive the initial explosion of a Nuclear attack and onwards.
Well firstly, always do Duck & Cover

That should be the first thing you do, as Duck & cover is built to severely minimize possible damages from any case of scenario where it's deemed necessary

In this case that would be the damage coming from the initial flash & shockwave
Performing duck & cover doesn't only protect vital organs but also shields you off from severe burns on vital parts of your body

IE: Instead of debris slamming your head, it'll be hitting your arm, a 2nd best case scenario in this matter
The thermal phase of a nuclear strike can also last for several seconds, so performing duck & cover can actually reduce the severity of your burns enormously
Also, in terms of the after effects, believe it or not but: a 300-500 Kiloton nuke is more lethal than a 5+ Megaton nuke. As in larger strikes, the fireball can actually be larger than the lethal prompt radiation distance.
Note that even AIR will eventually shield itself from gamma radiation if there are enough quantities of it, which there tends to be a lot of air between you and the detonation zone of an extremely large warhead.
Although the air shielded you from radiation, the energy goes somewhere , specifically into the thermal and blast energy of the fireball, yay for us

BUT, I'm also talking about prompt radiation, not residual radiation, as residual radiation comes a minute after detonation.
And believe it or not, but fallout is somewhat negligible for airburst bombs. Contrary to popular belief, the residual radiation of the bombs that struck Japan in WW2 only inflicted at best mild radiation sickness, but even that was unlikely.
Basically all the radiation exposure people got was prompt radiation, and it was pretty damn significant.
Radiation exposure is a key aspect to why "duck & cover" is so vital, as when you get radiation sickness, your immune system basically drops off the deep end. Burns and injuries can easily become lethal, thus minimizing burns & injuries with this tactic is a must do for survival.
Also also, if you get a brief warning before the detonation, Duck & cover will actually REDUCE the amount of prompt radiation received, as putting any mass between you and the bomb.

The more mass between you and the bomb, the better.
Also also, Fallout can last at best for two weeks, but that goes for regular nuclear warheads

Unlike regular warheads, Salted nukes are designed to maximize fallout duration [3-5+ years of fallout bar minimum]
However, the US and several other nations holding warheads had already banned the use of Salted warheads, at least for now.
Also: After the initial blast, you'd probably want good protection, a basement can do just that.

As long as you have at least 3-4 weeks of food supply & clean water that is
Another tip: the moment you immediately want to move to duck & cover would be when you notice a bright flash, but at that moment you wouldn't want to be looking outside your window or at any areas which shows much light. To avoid going blind from the flash.
ANOTHER tip: To reduce hearing damage, you have to open your mouth wide open so the pressure of the wave DOES NOT FIND A REFLECTION SURFACE

This will be a CRUCIAL way of avoiding severe hearing damage and going deaf.

But wait, there's more.
If you were to be standing up during the flash and shockwave, you'd likely receive full third degree burns.

That's the complete opposite of you perform the duck & cover tactic
Also, you probably wouldn't want to be anywhere near where infrastructure is vital, IE: Cities & Suburbs, thus, your first action when things go hot should be to immediately get out - as such should be common sense.
Another key aspect would be your mentality & keeping a cool head.

When nuclear sirens go off, always put the concept of Duck & cover in your mind, even as a mantra.

Anything to not get you distracted from putting fourth a plan to be able to survive.
One could say, "what about the effects of cancer?", well actually.. You'd not really have to worry much about the effects of cancer and such if you're able to survive both the initial blast, reduce prompt radiation & residual radiation.
The odds of dying of radiation induced cancer in 2-3 months after a nuclear blast after radiation exposure is virtually little to none, it's highly unlikely. Takes far more time for that to develop.
Thyroid cancer which is caused by Iodine-131 fallout for example can form as soon as 5-10 years, although thyroid cancer from exposure to I-131 can be greatly reduced by people who consuming potassium iodine before exposure.
Hell, thyroid cancer is one of the most survivable and treatable cancers thus far.
But it's still important to acknowledge the chances of receiving natural-non radiation induced cancer.
Now onto the odds of radiation induced cancer, it's often cited to be about 5% per Sievert, and well if you can get 4 Sv in a short amount of time, you are prob dead from radiation poisoning. 8 Sv you are basically dead even if you get proper medical treatment.
At 2 Sv you have severe radiation poisoning. Mild radiation poisoning happens at around 400mSv; so if you are only exposed to prompt radiation and you don't develop mild radiation sickness, your odds of radiation induced cancer in the next couple years or decades is at best <2%.
To put it simply, when it comes to the hazards of radiation, cancer's the least of your worries unless you're a kid or you're pregnant, which if you're 18+ & not pregnant, that'll be out of the window.
I also advise that when things get hot, you carry around a way to measure radiation well, as hotspots can still exist, also you don't want to breathe nor eat any radiation dust, that's the most damaging kind of radiation if it gets in you.
So you might as well buy a form of device to track radiation if global conflict situations begin to turn.
Alongside at least 2 weeks+ worth of food & water to survive regular nuclear fallout, but you should always be considerate of a case of being struck with an unexpected salted nuclear warhead, thus its normally better to stockpile in large quantities but DILIGENTLY.
Luckily Salted nukes are highly frowned upon globally, so that might not be a worry as we speak.
Nonetheless, nuclear warfare is hellish and every case of scenario should be considered, but if you can follow through some of these steps and take in the advise given, survival could not be very far off.
Thank god that in this era, weapons such as salted nukes & neutral bombs are often frowned upon and seen as irrelevant and are no longer stockpiled, massively increases chances of long-term survival.
Also, about surviving fallout:
DO NOT stay in your car under ANY circumstances, nor in a mobile home IF you have better options, as that won't protect you against the gamma radiation & fallout.
What can however is a multi-story home with several layers. Remember that the more layers of the protection; the better, but I'm talking about brick or concrete here.
To block out 99% of radiation, it would require:
12.5cm of steel
40cm of Brick
60cm of concrete.
Another tip: You'll also always want to avoid the top floors in a large multi-story sturdy building during fallout IF ITS STILLING STANDING WITHOUT CRITICIAL OR EVEN MEDIOCRE DAMAGES.
Now, for when fallout gets in contact with you: Take off your clothes and put them in any available plastic bag, or immediately get it out of the area regardless.
then you have to quickly wash yourself and all body parts that have been exposed with water that isn't poisoned by radiation, but in every case of scenario you will want to avoid using conditioners when washing yourself, but soap & shampoo is a much better solution.
The key is also to take as much time as possible and do what you can to prevent scratching yourself.
You'll always want to stay inside a sealed strong room/area after nuclear fallout for AT LEAST 48 hours, and this cannot be overemphasized enough, as even 1% fallout can do damage to you.
Well that's basically all I know, boredom is a serious drug tbh
