When we sleep, we breathe. But for many people (~12% of US adults), the airway can become blocked during sleep.

An "apnea" is when the airway is totally blocked for at least 10 seconds.

A "hypopnea" is...well, we can& #39;t agree on the specs, but it& #39;s basically apnea lite.

Having an apnea makes your blood oxygen level drop, triggering the brain to wake up so you can breathe.

You may not remember any of these awakenings, but if you have many apneas/hypopneas per hour (15/hr is considered moderate), you& #39;re waking up many times thru the night.

This means that having obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), in addition to being terrible for your heart, is keeping you sleep deprived ALL THE TIME.

This is why people with OSA are pathologically sleepy.

So sleepy that they have up to a 15-fold risk of being in a car accident.

The @AASMorg recently found that OSA is costing the US $32 Billion/year in accidents, and $150 Billion overall (lost productivity, healthcare spending etc).

Of course, it also feels terrible: sleepy and tired all the time, more prone to depression, can& #39;t think clearly...

Good news: OSA is treatable!

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and its variations are effective treatments.

When first invented, it was a reverse vacuum attached to your face. But now it& #39;s much more sophisticated, comfortable, quiet, and sexy (not really sexy).

Ask your doc about OSA if you have 3 or more of:

S - snoring
T - tired/sleepy
O - observed apneas
P - https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="⬆️" title="Pfeil nach oben" aria-label="Emoji: Pfeil nach oben"> blood pressure

B - BMI>30
A - age>50
N - large neck
G - male

*NOTE: women & minorities tend to be UNDERdiagnosed. So even with fewer than 3, ask your doc anyway!

Bonus tip:

CPAP is great, but for many people, it can be hard to use it and stick to it (e.g., feels claustrophobic). Here& #39;s where a behavioral sleep medicine specialist can help. Check out these directories to find one near you:
