In 2010, my mother fell and broke her hip. She was taken to the hospital, supposedly x-rayed and told that there were no signs of broken bone. She was home for almost 6 months taking pain killers as instructed.
Fortunately we visited her shortly after and found her in pain. Took her back to the hospital and lo and behold after another x-ray, she did suffered a broken hip. She was rushed to another hospital where we had to first source and purchase a pin to repair her broken hip.
A few weeks later, she was still crying for pain that gets worse over time. As it turned out, as a result of sitting on a broken hip for over 6 months, she lost circulation in her legs and developed Gangrene.
I've never seen a doctor cried before but this one did. He said, this should not have happened. My mom lost both her legs. She had them removed on the same day I had to return to the UK.
My point, we've always have poor standard of healthcare in our hospitals, I have seen evidence that suggest duty of care is non existent. The only thing being adhered to was times for visitation. I've seen patient calling for help and no one responding to them.
Now I am not saying it's all bad, that was just my experience. I also lost my father who was in hospital alive for 24 hours and not seen a doctor but died shortly after.
The government is not perfect but we can see they are trying to make the necessary improvements to enable citizens to have even basic healthcare, with nurses and doctors who genuinely love their work and care for their patients.
Instead of tearing down, let's join hands and heart and support the efforts being made to make our health services better. We are #ONEJAMAICA some things should never be politicised.
