Just gonna point out to those saying it’s ok for cops to shoot someone in the back cuz in theory that person could run over & grab a knife in a car...hate to burst your compliance-at-all-cost bubble but that’s not a legal argument. ‘Should’ve complied’ isn’t what you think it is
‘If you don’t want to be shot then comply with the cops’ is just about the most pathetic most wrong belief system I can think of and I’m a cop. It’s the opposite of protect and serve. It’s cancer. It’s wrong. It’s systemic. The burden isn’t on our neighbors. It’s on us cops.
Nothing I say is profound or unique. Nothing I do is profound or unique. I have a large social platform cuz of a mean cat. But also nothing I say is impossible. We can change it. Change it all. Cops, slow down. Stop demanding to be obeyed & work the issue. Each call has a goal
And I’m just gonna point out again that there are other options than ‘do nothing’ or ‘do it wrong’. We cops need to slow down. We need to slow ourselves down. We need to slow the scene down. Even when it seems there is no time, there is time. Make time. It’s not a movie
Some of our calls are scary. Some are truly terrifying. Most are not. And None are helped by us acting faster than our judgement. What is the goal of the specific call. Work that issue. And only that issue. Stop being afraid. We can change this. We can change all of this.
