Varrick's full name is actually Iknik Blackstone Varrick, but we just know him as Varrick. To begin he is a nonbender who was born in the SWT, just like Sokka. Both are very charismatic and masterminds at plans and battles, as Sokka planned the Invasion on the Day of Black Sun +

while Varrick masterminded the Civil War between the NWT & the SWT. Sokka is a very naturally funny and humorous person, and Varrick takes those traits as well, making friends with Team Avatar and cracking jokes a lot of the times. He is also an inventor and likes to +

create machines, just like Sokka invented the first submarines for the invasion, also created fake bending, and made air power relevant and also used cooler to sail a boiling lake. Sokka's smarts helped save Team Avatar many times. +

Varrick's name is also BLACKSTONE, which if you remember Sokka's 'Space' Sword, was made from a BLACK METEORITE. Sokka lost his sword during the final battle against the Fire Nation. Knowing Sokka, he would've definetly named his child after something memorable to him. +

not to mention sokka telling aang to "do the thing!" to wow and impress other people with aang's airbending tricks the same way varrick tells zhu li to "do the thing!" which is either to help him or to impress others the same way sokka did it!
