Hey @BYU students. Can we talk about COVID-19? I have missed you and want us to have a successful and vibrant semester. Our actions in the coming days will determine whether we make it to Thanksgiving...or Labor Day. 1/10
When we wrote our reopening report earlier this month, our fears were still theoretical. The models told us that the risk was high for universities, but we all hoped the simulations were wrong. 2/10 https://pws.byu.edu/making-sense-of-the-research-on-covid-19-and-school-reopenings">https://pws.byu.edu/making-se...
We have now seen campus after campus open and reclose because of outbreaks. 26,000 cases and 64 deaths on college campuses so far. Students sent home at huge expense and with great disruption. 3/10 https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/covid-college-cases-tracker.html">https://www.nytimes.com/interacti...
What went wrong? Even though classroom precautions were largely successful, socializing off campus short-circuited on-campus measures. Parties, casual conversations, and activities with those outside of your household will spread this disease and shut us down. 4/10
Is the same thing going to happen @BYU? We don& #39;t have bars...but we do have ward socials and FHE. What can we do? 5/10
First, follow the on-campus rules carefully. We know it& #39;s not enough on its own, but being vigilant on campus is a crucial place to start. 6/10
Second, wear a mask. It helps and it can save lives. When should I wear a mask, you ask? See the flowchart by @BYUSloanClone and colleagues below. 7/10
Third, keep your contacts low! Besides class and church, don& #39;t attend any large gatherings or have close contact with those outside your household. 8/10
Fourth, learn to have fun with the people you live with or with a small "bubble" of friends. This can let you develop deeper relationships in a smaller group. Be inclusive of those who are isolated (we need each other more than ever), but keep your bubble small. 9/10
Fifth, take this seriously and help your friends take this seriously. The semester and our health are literally on the line. Love and hope to you all. 10/10
