As someone who has been actively speaking out about how there should be more black farmers and black-owned farmland, I am VERY concerned about this #noellestevenson #shera controversy.
Yes, my ancestors tilled the fields as slaves. That’s a shitty part of our history.

But not allowing anyone to even *talk* about black ppl farming sets us back so far.

Please think about the greater ramifications before you cancel with your emotions. We are more than our trauma
I don’t stand with anyone but I’ll put the #IStandWithNoelle hashtag here to get more eyes on this thread
Black people own only 1% of farmland in the United States. The mentality that caused this outrage isn’t going to help matters. https://atlantablackstar.com/2017/06/30/from-15-million-acres-to-1-million-how-black-people-lose-their-land/

#shera
Ppl who were uncomfortable w the way Noelle made the joke have every right to critique. That allows them to advocate for themselves & her to grow.
But calling for her to be cancelled over this sets a dangerous precedent for the future of Black America in the social consciousness
And gives more power to white supremacy- they can point to this and say “See, they don’t even want to be farmers!” and keep not selling us land, which in turn keeps us from one of the easiest ways to pass on generational wealth. We’re shooting ourselves in the foot with this.
