This isn’t mentioned in the piece but let me tell you why FB and YouTube “news” is so big. It’s free and easy to get. If you can’t afford, or don’t have the time for cable TV, Internet, or print news subscriptions it’s all right there for you on your phone.

Local media is dead. Everything is nationalized. And the digital divide is real, real, real. So many people don’t have broadband. No streaming. But they have FB memes and that’s how they get their news. That is the reality for people outside big cities without broadband.
