I went into one of the immigrant-owned markets in town, and the owner told me she had been waiting for days for an “American person” to come in so she could learn how to register to vote. She had the form, but didn’t know how to fill it out. 1/5
I stayed for a half hour at the counter and walked through the registration and absentee forms in between customers checking out. This was her first time ever voting and she was so excited! 2/5
This interaction highlighted three things for me.
First, voting is so important!! Check with people around you. Make sure they understand the process and are ready to participate in the election. It’s something we all get the chance to do, and something we all need to do. 3/5
Second, go to a neighborhood you’ve never shopped in before. Try a new style of food from an immigrant-owned market nearby! You could make a friend in the process, and also you’ll probably find goods you’ll love. We gotta support POC-owned local businesses. 4/5
Finally, be patient with people! Just because someone hasn’t participated in something, or doesn’t understand it yet, doesn’t mean they absolutely wouldn’t jump at the chance once someone includes them. We can all be better neighbors. 5/5
