Every semester, I begin my Intro to Feminist Theory class w/ @SaraNAhmed& #39;s "Feminist Killjoys & Other Willful Subjects" & bell hook& #39;s "Theory as Liberatory Practice," which use an image of a family at a dining table to make discuss hierarchical, paternalistic societies. 1/-
Every semester, my students find new, profound depths in these images. Today, it coping w/ someone @ the "table" who won& #39;t wear a mask. Realizing how deep the wounds go from being told their health/well-being is irrelevant by members of their "family" was heart-rending. 2/-
Then came connections between w/ members of their "family" who ignore other systemic health risks, esp. racial injustice. They concluded these harms *never* go away. You can change tables, but you can& #39;t escape the harm done by those who refused to acknowledge your hunger. 3/-
