"mental health issues are all about perspective/mindset" is such a harmful take on so many levels, but mostly because it lacks any nuance
there is absolutely no way to universalize the cause of mental health struggles because it will never be the same for any person, and in most cases, there will be multiple root causes that require different solutions
ironically, spiritual twitter and traditional cognitive behavioral therapy seem to agree on this. that if you just change your thoughts, you can overcome depression/anxiety/OCD/whatever your struggles are
and they aren't completely wrong. most of us get caught up in thinking traps or have deep-seated thought patterns that perpetuate some of our suffering. but that's only a part of what's going on, and sometimes even a small part
focusing on thoughts doesn't account for the situations when the fears and thought patterns being targeted are based in reality. it's irresponsible to tell someone that their fear is an issue of mindset when they are actually vulnerable—to abuse, to violence, to discrimination
we also know that trauma literally changes the brain, and that trauma is held in the body. anyone who has experienced trauma (which is a lot of people, especially marginalized people) is unlikely to be able think their way out of its effects
holistic healing from trauma and mental health struggles can't simplify the root causes, many of which are related to systems and institutions and can't always be managed on the individual level
