There are three views of the American system in competition:
1. The American system is rooted in incomparably good founding ideals, and tinkering can improve it;
2. The American system is rooted in evil, cruel, malicious or false ideals, and it must be torn out at the root;
3. The American system is rooted in evil, cruel, malicious or false ideals, and we can work within that system to change it.
Democrats seem to be arguing (3).
The problem is that the premise of (3) is closer to (2) than to (1). This makes the means of attaining change secondary to the solidarity of purpose. This is why Democrats are having such a tough time condemning (2) and such an easy time condemning (1).
