Thread of why Ariana Grande is an amazing vocalist cos she is despite what I may insinuate -
In this thread I’m gonna go over all parts of her voice and then extras such as breath control, dynamics, runs, etc
Ariana is a Light Lyric Soprano with a range of D3-B5-E7. This means her voice is very light in weight and bright in tone. Because of this weight and naturally airy nature, her voice is suitably quite agile and her ease in her upper register is phenomenal.
Low Notes - For someone with such a naturally high voice, her notes are amazing, with support extending down to F#3 which is incredible. It’s also clearly a register that’s developed throughout her career.

Songs that show this - God is a woman, R.E.M, needy
Mid Belts - Ariana’s midbelts are fully resonant and she shows off her incredibly developed vibrato often. Despite the natural small volume of her voice, she can easily fill a stadium with her resonance.

Songs that show this - Jason’s Song, The Wizard and I (Cover)
Upper Belts - Probably the area where Ariana has the most ease in her register due to her naturally high notes. Despite the lack of support past Eb5 and consistent support past C5, her tone flourishes here.

Songs that show this - breathin, Be My Baby, no tears left to cry
Head Voice - contrary to popular belief, Ariana does use her head voice for notes in the upper 5th octave and sometimes the 6th. The sound is quite full and feminine compared to her falsetto.

Songs that show this - Into You (Live), Everyday (Live)
Falsetto - Ariana’s falsetto can soar into the top of the 6th octave and is used more frequently than her head voice as it is more sustainable for notes in the 6th octave compared to her head voice due to having less weight.

Songs that show this - The Way, God is a woman
Whistle Register - Her whistle register is something she only recently started to use in her music. At the beginning of her career, she just pushed her falsetto, but now she’s uses whistles which are more piercing and brighter.

Songs that show this - imagine, Emotions (cover)
Breath control - In the past, it is clear Ariana struggled with breath control due to her breathlessness live, but now seems more than capable of handling 2 hours of vigorous performing live as well as dancing. The problem isn’t gone, but is less evident nowadays.
Melisma - Ariana is adept at using melisma, her voice agile and easily manoeuvrable, helped by its small size and weight. She can do complex runs with speed and versatility as well as transition registers, shown by the famous ‘Only 1’ riff. The only real flaw is her jaw tension.
Tone and texture - Her tone is one of my favourites in the industry, being very sweet and bright. She’s also known for adding an airy quality to any part of her voice, adding depth to her skill and songs.
Overall - Ariana is a very incredible technical singer and very much a vocalist. She may not be perfect, but that doesn’t detract from her skill and the leaps and bounds of progress she’s made in recent years.
