I read this. Now I'm going to write this thread, and then I'm hopefully never going to talk about Wheeler again. https://twitter.com/WinnipegNews/status/1298777256664469505
This isn't about giving someone another chance.
This is about how many times do we keep giving a person another chance? Especially someone who is consistently vocal with not just bad takes, but harmful ones? Wheeler has showed us who he is, up to and including his election bid.
I'm not even going to get into how wrong it is for a grown man to be shouting "debate me" like a petulant teenager on the internet (especially when debating often means debating their own humanity or someone elses) and then blocking people who disagree.
He has showed us over and over and over again who he is. On the radio. In the last election. On social media (look at his Twitter feed right now! If you aren't blocked already!)
But he also doesn't exist in a vacuum.
I don't want to hear anymore about how he may or may not deserve a Fifth Chance.
I want to hear about the people who never got a first chance.
I want to hear about people who prematurely ended a career in radio--or never even started one--because people like Wheeler made it feel like a club they weren't welcome in.
I want to hear about people fired to make way for another chance for Wheeler.
I want to hear about all the awesome people in Winnipeg Radio who are doing things to lift up the community. Who are kind, or funny, or heck just even good at their jobs.
In Wpg morning radio alone we have people who volunteer, who lift up others, who give back to the community, who support others, who go out of their way to do good things. Who quietly work behind the scenes. And who don't ask others to debate their humanity in return.
And let's not forget the amazing people of campus and community radio!
I'm done talking about Wheeler. He doesn't deserve a platform so let's not give him one. He has learning to do on his own. We don't need to be out here teaching a grown man why he should be kind.
