As our semesters ramp up, I want to share a resource that may be useful to #EconTwitter for #TeachEcon purposes: the YouTube series @anythingbdismal, which made 6 great episodes (ep 7 is on the way!) applying econ to important topics of our COVID times your classes may cover. 1/N
Episode 1 is about sports econ. Besides introducing students to the field of sports econ & to economists @humphreys_brad and Pamela Wicker, it covers concepts like consumer surplus. 2/N
Episode 2 is about behavioral econ! With @pauljferraro, @ThunstromLinda, and @spbhanot, we cover topics like norm conformance, public image and perception, and how peer pressure and formal rules may support each other. 3/N
Episode 3 is about online K-12 education. This episode focuses particularly on the inequities that may be perpetuated and how we can fight them, with insights from @CarycruzBueno, @EscuetaMaya, and Cassandra Hart. 4/N
Episode 4 is about food - how our food system has been affected by COVID-19, how we are changing in response, how food insecurity is affected, and what policies and solutions can help. Featuring @jjmccluskey and @Norbert_Wilson. 5/N
Episode 5 tackles weighty questions around race in the US. Featuring @RobynnCox and Elizabeth Luh, we explore the evidence on biased police enforcement against Black Americans and the ramifications that has through Black communities. 6/N
Episode 6 looks at unemployment impacts of the COVID recession. In this episode, @LipstickEcon, @economistmom, & Julieta Yung talk about how the labor market impacts have been unequally distributed, & discuss measures for an equitable recovery. 7/N
Our last episode, which will drop this week, gives a peek behind the scenes of our process, and will also feature a lot of economists trying to bust myths about who economists are and what we do. 8/N
The series is the brainchild of the inspiring @JCavigliaHarris, who wants to communicate ideas from econ to the broader public and to break down barriers within econ so we all - regardless of pedigree or demography - have a voice. I've been grateful to be part of it! 9/9
