I am currently away attending an Army Military Police training class. I am the ONLY soldier who is not a Law Enforcement Officer for my civilian job. Here are some of the comments I’ve heard from these soldiers/cops about #Kenosha:

“That kid was doing God’s work”
“I’m upset he didn’t kill more protestors”
“If I wasn’t here, I’d drive up to WI with my AR and bag a few”
“The kid did nothing wrong.”
“Too bad that kid didn’t have a 500 round drum”
“Kill them all”

Folks, these are active police officers serving in a lot of Midwestern communities. And this is how they feel/speak. I’m beginning to think it’s not just “a few bad apples” but a larger more fundamental issue that need to be addressed before we get real change.

And this is EXTREMELY upsetting to me. I’ve spent most of my 17 year military service as Military Police. I take seriously my oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the US. I also teach US Government and Civics which entails teaching about Constitutional rights.

The mentality of these officers, their disregard for the rights of citizens guaranteed by the Constitution and the law angers me and makes me want to re-enlist again and again to at least be that voice of reason for as long as possible.

In a class of 20, we are all white. Only 1 female.
I’m one of the few with a bachelors degree, only one with a Master’s.
This is why we need diversity in policing & higher education requirements. We also need to change how we train so Police don’t see the public as the enemy.
