We need to be clear about what the Home Office video means. Yes, it attacks the integrity of the legal profession. Yes, that effectively undermines the rule of law. Yes, it's basically politicised anti-immigrant propaganda. Yes, it's a dog-whistle tactic to cause outrage. BUT ...
... what this really shows us is a further undermining of standards and established conventions. The Civil Service Code and propriety guidance apply, and in line with those the video is wholly inappropriate. Yet it's there. Whoever authorised this, and those who continue to ...
... undermine standards in ways shown here are playing with fire and nobody will be able to control it eventually. If trust in institutions, the Civil Service and the rule of law are further undermined, there is a real danger of a complete collapse. This game can only be ...
... played for a certain amount of time until, with the help of some media outlets and commentators, you get to a situation we are seeing in the US right now: democracy itself so hollowed out that law enforcement officials are supporting insurrectionists. Just think of the ...
... vigilantism we've already seen on the Kent coast here, or of what Generation Identity has been doing, sending UK recruits to far right combat training camps. Instead of an open discussion about these very real and dangerous challenges to our society, this Governtment, ...
... now also via Govt Departments, continues to provide food for the narratives that underpin these kinds of movements. It does not require direct far right engagement to feed them! The normalisation of anti-immigrant narratives and things like the Home Office video are enough.
But then we of course also see ministers and even the PM actively dragging us into a pseudo culture war about the Proms instead and history instead, creating division where there either wasn't any before, or where a reflective and sensitive approach is needed.
The UK is at the tipping point and, come January, it may well tip over, especially if problems with the management of COVID continue. I've thought this on other matters before, but now the perfect storm really is building up, and this Govt is actively strengthening it. /end
PS: Interesting development. But of course the phrase is out there now, and it has been used by others in other contexts. In any case, the video will have been enough already to feed certain narratives among those I referred to in my thread above. https://twitter.com/jdportes/status/1299020935115272192?s=20
One more PS:
The Home Office has now deleted the tweet. That is good. But all my points above remain valid. And tweet with video been shared and watched a lot of times — that damage is done.
